Rug weaving in Kars has been a tradition since the 16th century. Ever since, the art of hand woven rugs has been passed down through generations. The designs usually consist of a variety of geometric and large scale motifs with medallions in the center field. Woven on high steppes, the wool used in Kars Rugs is generally dark in color and the texture is coarse and thick due to the inherent characteristics of the sheep inhabiting the region.
